The Portman estate in Marylebone, acquired by the Portman family in the 16^th century, was developed from 1760 by Henry William Portman. Street names such as Orchard and Bryanston come from family estates respectively in Somerset and Dorset, Fitzhardinge from a family related to his ancestors, Wyndham from his wife’s family. In Portman Square, n°20 is by Robert Adam, built for Countess Home (1773-77).
