The Portman estate in Marylebone, acquired by the Portman family in the 16th century, was developed from 1760 by Henry William Portman. Street names such as Orchard and Bryanston come from family estates respectively in Somerset and Dorset, Fitzhardinge from a family related to his ancestors, Wyndham from his wife’s family. In Portman Square, n°20 is by Robert Adam, built for Countess Home (1773-77).
