This house was inhabited by the Linleys, including the harpsichord player Elizabeth Linley, who eloped with the playwright Sheridan; his play The Rivals is based on their runaway marriage. He later became a politician and a member of Brook’s Club in London. A drawing by Gainsborough probably represents a musical party at the Linleys’.
