From this viewpoint, the Castle and the Old Town of Edinburgh can be seen on the rock. To the left (towards the East), in the plain, the New Town with its chequerboard plan of streets lined with homogeneously built houses.

These buildings (early 19th century) were meant for the Royal Institution, and are now The National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy.

In the centre, the “Royal Mile” descending towards Holyrood House can be seen, and to the left in the plain the New Town with its chequerboard plan, completed by the time when this view was painted (mid 19th century; Hill was also one of the first practitioners of photography in Scotland).
