George Square, close to the Old Town (built in 1763-64 and named in honour of the king), was a first attempt to build terraced houses in a homegeneous modern architectural style.
According to one of Smollett ’s characters,it imitates the English type of square.

This view shows the relationship between the Old Town and the New Town: the Old Town appears at the end of one of the transversal streets of the New Town which leads towards the Castle on a North-South axis (with the main East-West streets of the New Town parallel to the Old Town, crossing the transversal street at right angles).
The house to the left (seen frontally in the photographs below) was the home of Sir Walter Scott.

Moray Place (1822), a twelve-sided circus, is one of the major developments of the Second New Town. The polygonal plan produced houses which were much larger at the rear, enabling vast suites of rooms to be accommodated for entertaining one’s guests.
